Homeowner's HVAC Checklist
Your AC system works hard for you every single day — quietly keeping your home comfortable through Florida summers most systems would struggle with. Some care is easy enough to handle yourself in a few minutes; other tasks are best left to a trained tech with the right tools. Here's exactly what to do, and when to pick up the phone.

MONTHLY
☐ Check your air filter. Pull it out and hold it up to a light — if you can't see light through it, replace it. A dirty filter is the #1 cause of poor airflow, higher bills, and early system wear. Standard filters need checking monthly, even if you don't replace every time.
☐ Clear your outdoor unit. Walk outside and remove leaves, grass clippings, mulch, or anything piled against the unit. Keep at least 2 feet of clearance on all sides so it can breathe.
☐ Listen and look. Stand near your indoor and outdoor units for a minute. New rattling, clicking, or grinding — or water pooling near the indoor unit — are early warning signs worth tracking, even if the system still seems to be working fine. Call us.
☐ Notice something off? Call us. A weird noise, a weird smell, or anything you're just not sure of is reason enough to call — you don't need to diagnose it yourself first.
☐ Check your thermostat. Confirm it's reading the room temperature accurately and holding your set point. If it feels off, it may need a battery change or recalibration.

QUARTERLY KNOW YOUR LIMITS
☐ Straighten outdoor unit fins (DIY, carefully). If you see bent fins on the outdoor unit, a fin comb (a few dollars at any hardware store) can gently straighten them to restore airflow.
☐ Flush the condensate drain line — this is where we come in. This one requires accessing the line and using the right equipment to clear buildup without damaging the system. It's a quick, affordable visit that prevents water damage and system shutdowns — Book Online or Call and we'll take care of it.
☐ Coil and refrigerant check — call JLR. If you're noticing weaker airflow, ice on the lines, or higher bills, your coils may need cleaning or your refrigerant may need checking — both require a licensed tech.

Annually — Call JLR
☐ Full system tune-up. This is the single most important thing on this list, and it's not a DIY job. A licensed tech checks refrigerant levels, electrical connections, coil condition, and overall system performance — catching small issues before they become expensive ones.
☐ Professional coil cleaning. Even with regular filter changes, coils accumulate buildup over time that only a proper cleaning can remove.
☐ Ductwork inspection. Leaky or damaged ducts waste energy you're already paying for — often without you ever knowing. Worth a look once a year, especially if your energy bills feel high for your usage.
☐ Honest age check. If your system is 10–15+ years old, ask us for a straightforward assessment — repair vs. replace — before a breakdown forces the decision for you.
A little consistency on your end, paired with the right professional visits at the right times, is what keeps you off the "AC died on the hottest day of the year" list. Ready to schedule? Book Online or Call Us — JLR Air Conditioning Services LLC is here for everything on this list that goes beyond a filter change.
